A Team | A Message | A Mission
The Team: Athletes, adventurers and explorers embark on inspiring human-powered (i.e. "clean") pursuits around the world to promote and fundraise for...
The Message: The simultaneous technological advancement and adoption of renewable energy in the developed world; and the reduction of energy poverty through innovative applications of clean-tech systems in communities in need.
The Mission: Implement solar and wind energy; water purification; and satellite communications projects for remote communities in need, where the innovation and flexibility of such technologies make impacts tangible, direct, and purpose-specific.
How I plan on using the money
Clean Pursuits is working with Somos Amigos to develop a solar energy solution for their medical clinic in a remote corner of the Dominican Republic. The NS prize would enable up to 2kw of clean solar power, freeing the organization from a dirty, loud, diesel generator (and cash flow liability).
About me
I’m currently an MBA student at Boston College, studying Energy and Technology Markets. Post-MBA (2010) I will pursue business development roles promoting renewable energy and technologies. I've competed in many ultra-endurance events, and will do so in the future under the Clean Pursuits banner.

I love this plan, I'd like to help out wether you get the funding or not, I'm way out of shape, but running to provide clean power? I'm WAY behind this cause.

what happens if you break your leg? this whole thing is based on one guy (or two) running in some races?

A response to some general comments about the nature of this venture:
1. The contest description states that entries be about "big/great ideas" - not specifically web 2.0 apps or sites.
2. However, Clean Pursuits would be registered as *adventure.co* ...A huge part of this venture, whether selected as a winning idea or not, is about "re-branding" adventure, giving it meaning and purpose, and defining the alignment between the human spirit for adventure and the need to preserve the environments we enjoy adventures in, through innovative applications of cleantech technologies, big and small.
3. Yes, Clean Pursuits already has a .org website, plans for a team, and plans developing for a solar energy project in the D.R.; but the venture is still incubating, and the marketing and funding opportunity of this contest would both enhance and accelerate the Clean Pursuits mission.
Thanks for considering Clean Pursuits for your vote. -Matt Marino

Hi Dewy- We are focused on solar technology. By the way, satellite communications plans - which would enable the transmission of x-ray images and the like back to specialists in the U.S. - are a couple of dollars/month. We're not looking to launch a new satellite. Although that would be pretty cool.

Grayson- Sorry for the delay. We've started the process of filing for 501C3 status in Massachusetts.

Hi Leslie- Sounds cool, I will dig around. Best, MCM

Hi Dresden- I agree, we have lots of work to do in the U.S. too. For my day job, I work for an alternative energy company that is contributing to more sustainable domestic generation. I think its important for the developing world to also have opportunities for clean, sustainable infrastructure. Thanks, MCM

Hi Alex- First, your comments presume that one of the other ideas can a) execute against their pitch and b) actually provides a "benefit" that reaches millions. By successfully executing the DR project - which in fact, is for a clinic that serves thousands - we will replicate the model in other communities. Furthermore, if there is an area in the contest description that states this must be a for-profit product/service/sales venture, please let me know. Thanks, MCM

Hi Josseppi- To your points: Capital costs for 2kw solar equipment would be less than $20k; We have 3 specific target audiences to market too, and would undergo major web overhaul to direct messages better to them...ultimately, just like any business, the better we market, the better we can execute; Non-profits ("charities") have P&L statements too. Thanks for your interest, MCM

Hi Gary- Thanks for your interest and comment. We are not looking to replace the good work of the Peace Corps. We plan on running very specific pilot programs for innovative technologies and cleantech applications. Seems like there is more than enough need in the world for more than one service organization? Best, MCM

guys, this *is* a good idea, how ever it would cost way more then this contest is offering and also the United States government has made an organization that already does this all over the world. Im sure you all are framiliar with The Peace Corps
Josseppi said...
Do you already have the research done to do this? If so will it really only cost $25,000? My final question is what will the $25,000 for website design and development be used for. It does not sound like this is a business venture, but rather a charity, no matter how noble it may be. (I have nothing against charities in any way)
Alex Velicky said...
Plus it only benefits like the 30 people in the Dominican Republic, unlike most of the other ideas who would benefit millions... It is a great goal, but this is NOT a charity, so go ask your local church.
Medgar said...
I think it's a great goal and it's noble but I dont' think it should win this contest.
Dresden Gardner said...
okay so this seems like what the peace corps do. Also, shouldn't we be making america clean first, then other countries?
Dresden Gardner said...
my bad sorry i take that back. i posted on the wrong page my bad. forget that i said that. i meant to post that on club insider.
Dresden Gardner said...
This seems like a pyramid scheme just to make money to me. I don't think this is a good or practical use of money.
Leslie Sirag said...
There was someone on another contest (Chase? AmEx?) who had figured out a way to recycle mylar from garbage like potato chip bags into solar panels for developing countries. Maybe you should track them down.
Grayson said...
Hi - I am thinking about voting for you but I want to know if you are non-profit. Can you please answer?
Reah said...
this person posted this and totally doesn't even care about the contest because they havent even come back to check on questions and stuff.
Dewy Reynolds said...
With such large proposterous ideas, this competition is not for you. Satalites? Thats some of the most expensive technology there is out there and this prize money will suffice? Im sorry but this is not an efficent use of .co's money.
Gary Brusse said...
"Implement solar and wind energy; water purification; and satellite communications projects for remote communities in need"
thats the peace corps. sorry

I agree with Brian, this (might) be a good idea, but this contest is defiantly not the place for it.
Brian Zable said...
You seem to already have a site, a team, and some resources. This contest is for bringing new ideas to life, like Timothy said. It does not seem as though you need all the resources this contest could give you, while others do.
Jonny Saunders said...
Not an efficient use of money. The ideals are there, but the pragmatism is not. Thumbs down.
Timothy said...
Isn't this contest for new, web 2.0 ideas?
Jeremy Feldman said...
Why are we provivding the green energy to remote communities that use a mere fraction of the power our cities do. Our focus should start at tranforming the energy of these large consumers. It is there that we will make the greatest impact for a soceity with cleaner energy. Also i agree with B Sumit and Justin Andrews. There is no need for you to have a new site as yours already exists and functions properly. This contest is for thsoe with new ideas not to change your existing website to a .co.
B Sumit said...
I have now re-read your plan. So will you use the prize money for the water purifier?
B Sumit said...
It is unclear to me what you intend for the new site, the CleanPursuits.co site to do. You have a team and a message and a mission but how will the play a role in all of this? Is it just a communications place?

it's cool that this site already exists as a .COM. do you really think they will use the .CO domain?

is this a site that already exists?
